Walt Disney Studios had hoped "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides" could be the first $100 million opener of 2011, but they'll have to make due with a still potent $90.2 million debut.

"On Stranger Tides" found itself with the biggest opening of the year, besting "Fast Five's" $86.5 million, but it also benefited from higher IMAX and 3D theater ticket prices. At a reported cost of $250 million, Disney is probably breathing a sigh of relief that "Pirates" continues to overperform outside the U.S. In fact, "Pirates" set an overseas record this weekend with $256.3 million in ticket sales.

"The Hangover Pt. II" has grossed a staggering $86.4 million over the three-day weekend and $118 million since debuting on Thursday. The film's five-day estimate now looks like it will hit $135 million. That's the second biggest opening for an R-rated film in history after "The Matrix Revolutions" found $139 million in 2003. "Hangover II" is also a smash overseas and should easily equal and possibly out gross the first "Hangover's" $467 million global cume when all is said and done.

Having a solid, but not spectacular debut domestically was "Kung Fu Panda 2." The DreamWorks Animation sequel has grossed $53.8 million so far and should find $65 million for the five-day holiday weekend. That's not that far off from the first "Kung Fu Panda's" $60 million debut in 2008, but the sequel is also benefiting from higher 3D ticket prices. Luckily, the animated adventure has no real competition amongst family films until "Mr. Popper's Penguins" opens on June 17 and "Cars 2" hits the road on June 24.

Dropping to third was "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides." The critically panned Rob Marshall four-quel is looking at $39.3 million for the three-day frame. It's estimated cume is $152.9 million so far. Hitting the $300 million mark of the three previous pictures is likely out of reach at this point.

Showing remarkable word of mouth is "Bridesmaids" in the fourth the slot with a four-day take of $16.3 million. Dropping only 21%, the Kristen Wiig and Maya Rudolph comedy should hit the $90 million mark by Monday and surpass $100 million by sometime next weekend. That's not a summer surprise, that's a summer smash.
Fifth place went to Marvel Studios and Paramount Pictures' "Thor." The God of Thunder conjured up another $9.3 million over the holiday frame for an estimated cume of $159.7 million. Whether the "Avengers" prequel can hit the $200 million mark remains to be seen.

Noteworthy, Woody Allen's "Midnight in Paris" cracked the top 10 at number seven with $1.9 million from just 58 theaters and a stellar $33,000 per screen. "Paris" has grossed $2.8 million in just two weeks.

Also in limited release, Terrence Malick's "The Tree of Life" grew $352,000 in just four engagements in New York and Los Angeles for a very impressive $88,000 per screen.

Ils disent que c'est "out of reach" justement

Mais pour ce genre de film, c'est le score "monde" qu'il faut aller chercher. Et quand bien même, ce qu'il faut trouver c'est le prix du P&A pour chaque pays pour voir s'ils font du pognon.

Avec un chiffre d'affaire d'un milliard au final, on peut malgré tout penser que Jerry et Mickey vont s'en mettre plein les fouilles.

Well… that’s not what anybody really wanted to happen. But with no stars, no particularly marketable plot hooks, and the baggage of two garbage predecessors, there couldn’t have been anyone expecting a whole lot more for X-Men: First Class. The film also opened in the post memorial day frame in which the box office is still sweaty, naked, and breathing hard while casting quick glances to its left to make sure she doesn’t look too disappointed.

One wonders if the lack of Wolverine in this film, or the overexposure of shitty Wolverine in the previous film did more to hinder this film. If the answer is “both,” that’s kind of an odd paradox.

The thing is, $56m isn’t terrible. Attendance is actually very close to Thor, but without a 3D ticket price bump, and it would seem that word-of-mouth is going to be very strong. Even an X-Men film as good as X-Men United only did $215 off of an $85m opening and great critical response though, so there’d have to be some pretty stellar legs under this thing to take it anywhere past “break even.” The international numbers are decent enough that no one will go home broke.

This leaves the franchise in an awkward position though. What if the juice just isn’t there to do a sequel to First Class? The future of X-Men will then likely lie with The Wolverine, which is still looking for a new director. Fox may try and push that film hard as a return to form (they will absolutely throw Hood’s first Origins film under the bus to do so) and then… who knows? Say “fuck it” and do a hard reboot of everything? Push the standalone(ish) Wolverine franchise farther? Pick up the pieces of The Last Stand and move forward with that timeline? McKellen and Stewart are both kickin’ dudes in their early 70s, but McKellen especially seems not long for the action-blockbuster game.

Lose si le film marche pas. Mais le bouche-à-oreille devrait asurer un futur à la franchise.

Les 55M$ qu'a récolté X-MEN en 2000 représentent aujourd'hui 80M$. Putain mais ça te fait relativiser encore plus chaque prétendu record qui tombe...

Qui-Gon re-découvre son ampleur qu'il avait oublié.

Faut vraiment que les sites commençent à relativiser beaucoup plus parce là tout le monde est dans le déni ("Biggest Memorial Day Weekend ever!!!", etc...)

Un truc qui m'a amusé récemment, c'est le bo de Stallone en comprenant l'inflation : Cobra, par exemple, avec 45M aux USA, faisait figure d'echec. Alors que 45M en 1986, ça fait à peu près 100M aujourd'hui, soit le score de The Expendables.

Oui mais à l'époque de Cobra, Stallone est THE superstar d'action...aujourd'hui, quand il parvient à faire 100M$, ça tient du miracle.

After months of buildup, Super 8 took top honors this weekend with an estimated $37 million from 3,379 locations. That figure is significantly higher than the film had been tracking just five days ago. Is it higher than the studio was hoping for five months ago? Not exactly.

X-Men tombe à 25M$ et ne franchit même pas la barre des 100.
