C'est reparti. EXCLUSIVE: Michael Mann’s passion project Ferrari is in the market on a new set of tyres ahead of an anticipated spring 2021 shoot. The Greatest Showman and Logan star Hugh Jackman is in discussions to star as Ferrari founder Enzo Ferrari and Mann has recently reworked the script, which was originally penned by the late Troy Kennedy Martin (The Italian Job). STX is now handling international sales and will directly distribute the film in the UK and Ireland. We understand Amazon is tying up a deal to bolster international with STX and has been integral in the process. CAA Media Finance arranged the financing and is repping domestic. The big-canvas racing drama instantly becomes one of the hottest projects at the Cannes virtual market. Four-time Oscar-nominee Mann will give a virtual presentation for buyers on Tuesday and the new script is hitting key distributors today. The film will chart the summer of 1957 when all the forces in Ferrari’s life – which were often as combustible and volatile as the iconic race cars he built – collided. The now legendary car company he and his wife Laura built was at the time going broke. Their tempestuous marriage had already suffered the death of their son, Dino, and Ferrari’s other son, 12-year old Piero, the product of a wartime romance, was struggling to find his place in the world. The entrepreneur rolled the dice for all their futures on one race – 1,000 miles across Italy, the brutal and infamous 1957 Mille Miglia. The film will be framed so that during the highly dangerous race, Laura discovers long kept secrets, we see opportunities rise and fade, and drivers, who are like surrogate sons, are pushed beyond the edge. Heat director Mann, who first started discussing the idea of the film with the late Sydney Pollack, told me: “The real power of this piece is in the emotionally charged lives of these people in complex, extreme circumstances. In addition, there is the explosive power and lethal beauty of racing. It has a great drama at its core and that’s why Ferrari stayed with me.” The movie, which has been a passion of Mann’s for almost two decades, has an almost Godfather-type feel to it and is rich in local flavour but also universal truths. Mann, who is familiar with the Ferrari family, will build a fleet of replica race cars from the era. Ça va bider, ils ont l'air de se gratter la tête pour savoir quoi raconter sur le sujet (en dehors des voitures rouges) et introduire du mélo qui risque de donner au film un côté "la famille Michel Vaillant sans les voitures". C'est un serpent de mer depuis 30 ans ce film. Il y avait un projet porté -et finalement réalisé- par le chanteur Chris Rea, dont la préparation a été plus commentée que la sortie, qui a donné lieu à un film tourné mais invisible (sauf peut-être aujourd'hui sur YouTube). Après, comme le projet n'intéresse que des anglo-saxons (significatif que le cinéma italien ne voit pas la vie de Ferrari comme suffisamment intéressante pour faire un film) l'angle était de se centrer sur les pilotes anglais et américains qui ont couru pour Ferrari dans les années 50/60 (Phil Hill et Surtees) ce qui auraient pu être intéressant car c'étaient deux fortes personnalités (plus que Ken Miles) mais la veine est épuisée par Le Mans 66. A présent ils introduisent du melo familial là où il n'y a peut-être pas lieu (bon d'accord Ferrari a essayé de faire du nom de son fils décédé le nom d'une marque de voitures moins chères, comme Ford aussi d'ailleurs). Sinon il y a bien un court plan (mais totalement fantasmatique car nocturne et désertique) qui intègre les Mille Miglia dans Armarcord de Ferrari. Le film de Mann va forcément entrer en concurrence avec cette vision. |

Pour moi, c'est surtout qu'il ne dégage pas du tout la même chose. Avant Jackman, c'était Bale et tu vois la parenté entre les deux. Un truc très homme, très Mann (mdr), raccord avec ses autres héros. |

Adam Driver va sans doute jouer Enzo Ferrari (qui avait pratiquement la soixantaine en 1957) plutôt qu'un pilote. A moins que le personnage principal ne soit Alfonso de Portago (noble espagnol qui n'est connu que pour s'être tué à cette course) ou une invention du film. |

Le chef op est celui des derniers Fincher, Erik Messerschmidt. Enfin du beau numérique chez Mann (qui avait évoqué la possibilité de revenir à la pellicule pour ce film)? |

J'ai toujours eu l'impression que la mocheté chez Mann était moins due au numérique qu'à l'usage volontaire d'une vitesse d'obturation basse, provoquant un flou de mouvement sur-prononcé. |
