Two of the best-reviewed films of the year are Paramount's "Star Trek" and Disney-Pixar's "Up." (je n'y crois pas)

The list of releases for the next six months includes some intriguing titles from a slew of Oscar-winning directors: James Cameron, with the 3-D "Avatar" (Fox); Clint Eastwood, the Nelson Mandela biopic "Invictus" (Warner Bros.-Spyglass); Peter Jackson, "The Lovely Bones" (Paramount's release of a DreamWorks pic); Ang Lee, "Taking Woodstock" (Focus); Martin Scorsese, "Shutter Island" (Par); Steven Soderbergh's "The Informant," with Matt Damon (WB); Robert Zemeckis' "A Christmas Carol" (Disney); and the Coen brothers' "A Serious Man" (Focus-Working Title).

Outsiders:
Michael Mann's July release "Public Enemies," starring Johnny Depp (Universal); the Jason Reitman film "Up in the Air," with George Clooney (Par's release of a DreamWorks pic); Spike Jonze's "Where the Wild Things Are" (WB); and Rob Marshall's starry musical "Nine," toplined by Daniel Day-Lewis (Weinstein Co.),
"Green Zone" (from the formidable Paul Greengrass)
Overture's "Jack Goes Boating" (Philip Seymour Hoffman's directing debut)

Indépendants
"Precious: Based on the Novel 'Push' by Sapphire," which it opens later this year; Fox Searchlight brought
"500 Days of Summer," from helmer Marc Webb, and bought
the Max Mayer-directed "Adam," starring Hugh Dancy.
Michael Haneke's "White Ribbon,"
Jacques Audiard's "A Prophet"
Pedro Almodovar's "Broken Embraces."
"Bright Star," from Jane Campion.

Breakdown :

Paramount's "Star Trek" : innominable.
Disney-Pixar's "Up."
"Invictus" (Warner Bros.-Spyglass) : Nomination garantie.
"The Lovely Bones" (Paramount's release of a DreamWorks pic) : Nomination garantie.
"Up in the Air" (Par's release of a DreamWorks pic) : le réal de Juno + l'acteur de Michael Clayton mais sujet bidon
"Where the Wild Things Are" (WB) : ha! l'espoir fait vivre.
"Jack Goes Boating" (Overture) : euh ouais mais nan t'as vu.
"Precious: Based on the Novel 'Push' by Sapphire" (Fox Searchlight) : THE indé de l'année, s'il y en a un c'est lui (et Fox Searchlight a fait nommer Little Miss Sunshine, Juno et évidemment Slumdog Imposteur)
"500 Days of Summer" & "Adam" : Variety fume.
"White Ribbon" : Etranger.
"A Prophet" : Etranger (s'il est choisi)
"Broken Embraces" : Etranger
"Bright Star" : Campion = has been aux Oscars

This year the Academy has set new standards for being nominated for Best Original Song. All eligible songs are graded by a scoring committee and only those songs which are given a grade of 8.25 (out of ten) or higher are to be nominated. If five songs score higher than 8.25 (the maximum allowed), then there will be five nominees. If NO songs get a score higher than 8.25, then there will be NO nominees and the category will be scrapped for that year.

But what if only one song grades higher than 8.25? Does that mean that it automatically wins? Not quite. That would mean that the next highest rated song would get a lucky bump and get nominated to compete against the other song. This is all done in the name of cutting down the bloat in the show and getting more people interested in watching again (and, I assume, most people weren't interested in those long musical numbers).
