Speaking with EW, Spielberg revealed that the delay was a result of him finding a better way to tell the story:

“We found that the film was costing a lot of money and I found a better way to tell the story more economically but also much more personally. I found the personal way into Robopocalypse, and so I just told everybody to go find other jobs, I’m starting on a new script and we’ll have this movie back on its feet soon.”

He told EW that he was “working on it as we speak,” but wasn’t sure of the timeline for when production might begin. He “estimated a delay of about six to eight months”.

He is currently deciding between “Robopocalypse,” which has now completed a rewrite after being put on hold and Steve Zaillian is currently writing the historical drama “Montezuma,” which likely is not far enough along to be next up for Spielberg.

Some people close to Spielberg insist that he has not committed to what he will direct next, though others say “Robopocalypse” is the frontrunner. Of all his current projects, sources say “Robopocalypse” is the farthest along, with one person noting that the budget is close to being finalized.

Chris Hemsworth is attached to star and though he is busy shooting “Avengers: the Age of Ultron,” those close to the Aussie thesp say he is still very much interested in finding a way to fit the robot pic into his schedule.

Another motivating factor for Spielberg to direct “Robopocalypse” is that it is a co-production between DreamWorks and Fox. Spielberg’s DreamWorks partner Stacey Snider, who is expected to land her next job at Fox, has let the director know that she plans to leave DreamWorks when her contract expires in late November.

Mmmmpf.

On dirait Real Steel.

At one point, Spielberg intended to helm “Robopocalypse,” but scheduling conflicts forced him to continue to push it off. The iconic director says he has always been fascinated “Robopocalypse,” but has not been able to find time to direct it himself. The handoff makes Bay the perfect fit, since it was Spielberg who handpicked him to take over the “Transformers” franchise as well.
